Thailand is infamous for its parties. The best known is the Thai new year of Songkran, which is essentially a country-wide water fight, and the Full Moon Festival, which draws millions of foreigners every year to the tiny island of Koh Phagnan. But neither of those are as spectacular as the Boon Bang Fai Rocket Festival, a little-known celebration held in the small northern town of Yasothon. Every year in May, Yasothon descends into a pit of delightful debauchery that is a weird as it is wonderful. For three whisky soaked days its citizens parade, dance and set off massive home-made rockets, all in an effort to honor a mythical Toad King. This year Coconuts TV paid a visit to Yasothon and it didn’t disappoint.
