On March 8, 1999, the state froze all bank accounts to try to manage the growing crisis. Intended to last 24 hours, the Bank Holiday went on for five days, sparking panic as Ecuadoreans were unable to access their savings. Almost two decades later, Ecuadoreans are still paying the price.
