PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA — North Korea fired four ballistic missiles into Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan on Monday.

The missiles were launched from North Korea’s Tongchang-ri region near the border with China. U.S. officials said the missiles were intermediate-range, CNN reported.

Of the four missiles launched, three of them landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone in the Sea of Japan. Some landed as close as 300 km from Japan’s northwest coast, Reuters reported.

“The launches are clearly in violation of Security Council resolutions. It is an extremely dangerous action,” Reuters quoted Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as saying.

North Korea’s state media news agency KCNA said the country’s leader Kim Jong Un supervised the launches.
