Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, Sofia (“Lost in Translation”),
and son Roman (“CQ”) are already well-established, and now his granddaughter Gia has made a persuasive directorial debut with “Palo Alto,” a lush adaptation of the short story collection by James Franco about the dreams and memories of high schoolers.
‘A History of Violence’ (Feb. 15)
This stunning crime thriller by David Cronenberg about a small-town diner owner (Viggo Mortensen) whose gangster past resurfaces, is at once
a satisfying exercise in ultraviolence, a disquieting study of man’s darkest impulses and a withering critique of American carnage.
‘The Constant Gardener’
Breaking out from the stuffy agencies and back rooms of a typical John le Carré story, this emotionally resonant thriller about a low-level
diplomat (Ralph Fiennes) investigating his the murder of his wife in Kenya exposes the dark side of the pharmaceutical industry.
‘Wayne’s World’ (Feb. 2)
There’s a time capsule quality to this very 1992 adaptation of the “Saturday Night Live” sketch about Wayne (Mike Myers), Garth (Dana Carvey),
and the public access show they produce from a basement in Aurora, Ill.
The final entry in Edgar Wright’s loosely associated “Three Flavors Cornetto trilogy” — “Shawn of the Dead”
and “Hot Fuzz” are the others — follows old friends who encounter killers androids on a pub crawl in their hometown.
