Airport attack: TSA rules and regulations for transporting firearms in checked baggage

PENTAGON CITY, VIRGINIA — The suspect who carried out a recent mass shooting at a Florida airport reportedly carried out the attack using a gun that was in his checked luggage.
Although laws vary by local and state governments, TSA guidelines do allow passengers to travel with firearms if they are stored properly.
Firearms must be unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container. Other firearm parts, including magazines and ammunition for small arms, can be placed in the same container.
The key to the container should only be retained by the passenger. The container can be placed inside a suitcase but it can only transported as checked baggage.
The passenger should check in at the airline counter and inform the airline representative about the firearm in his or her checked baggage. The representative will then have the passenger sign the weapon’s unloaded declaration slip.
The baggage will then be examined by TSA agents, while the passenger should standby until the agent clears the baggage for transportation.
Despite the fact that firearms are prohibited in carry-on bags, the TSA found 2,653 firearms in carry-on bags across the U.S. in 2015 alone, with more than 80 percent of those weapons being loaded.
