The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s specially designed inauguration SmarTrip fare card will not include either the likeness or the name of the man being sworn in as president.
According to DCist, the transportation service stressed that Donald Trump’s absence is in no way intended as protest.
The transit agency explained in a statement, “Metro requested permission to use a photo, but received no response from the campaign. Due to the long lead time to produce the cards, the new pass commemorates the national celebration of the 58th presidential inauguration."
As such, the cards were printed with a general patriotic design.
Special edition cards have been made for a number of previous inaugurations.
According to Washingtonian, "Previous inauguration-themed SmarTrip cards—released in 2009 and 2013, featured photographs of Barack Obama."
The card celebrating the swearing-in of Bill Clinton featured the president’s signature.
