Retailers Dispute Donald Trump’s Assertion That DC 'Dress Shops' Are Sold Out For Inauguration

On Monday, Donald Trump told the New York Times that so many people are attending his inauguration that, “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington.” Retailers in the area, however, disagree.
On Monday, Donald Trump told the New York Times that loads of people, including celebrities, will be attending his inauguration.
As evidence, he offered, “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.”
Retailers around the inauguration venue, however, disagree.
Martha Slagle, general manager of an area Neiman Marcus, told the Washington Post that those looking to grab a last-minute garment, “have more than a thousand evening gowns to choose from.”
Personnel at many Washington, D.C. boutiques gave similar reports of lush formal wear inventories.
Jennifer Nygard of Everard’s Clothing, noted, “We have plenty of dresses…sparkly dresses…long dresses…cocktail dresses,” and, “Yeah, ‘sold out’ is a real stretch.”
Harper’s Bazaar weighed in on Trump’s dress sales equals A-Lister attendance comment as well.
Though Lauren Alexis Fisher, the writer for the magazine, didn’t investigate the factual nature of the claim, she did point out sarcastically, “Because as we all know, celebrities do all their shopping in the dress shops of Washington D.C.”
