China continues to speak out about the importance of maintaining the one-China policy where Taiwan is viewed as a province, not a sovereign nation, notes the Chicago Tribune.
On Wednesday, An Fengshan, an official with China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, is translated by CCTV News as saying at a press conference, “What I want to reiterate is that there’s only one China. The Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China. It is a basic fact and the legal basis for cross-Strait relations, and it has never been and cannot be changed. It's also widely recognized by the international community. Our stance on opposing Taiwan independence is unswerving.”
Meanwhile, in what appears to be a separate news briefing, Geng Shuang with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is reported to have said, “China has repeatedly made its position clear. The one-China principle is the political basis of the relationship between China and the United States. We have emphasized that if the principle is damaged or disrupted, than healthy ties cannot be sustained and cooperation in key areas will have to be halted.”
He went on to say, in part, “...we are against any official visits and military cooperation between the U.S. and Taiwan.  We urge the relevant party in the U.S. to honor its commitment to the one-China policy...and properly deal with Taiwan-related issues in a discreet manner so as to avoid unnecessary disruptions to overall bilateral relations.”
According to the BBC, tensions between China and the U.S. have risen since President-elect Donald Trump’s phone conversation with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen on December 2.
