Back in June, Michael Sandford, a 20-year-old from England, was arrested in Las Vegas following a failed attempt to grab an officer’s gun for the purpose of shooting Donald Trump, reports The BBC.
On Tuesday, he was sentenced to serve one year and one day in prison.
While Sandford at one time faced an incarceration period lasting up to two decades, his attorneys successfully argued for a much shorter term.
They noted the man is autistic, suffers from severe anxiety, and was having a psychotic episode at the time of the incident, notes The Telegraph.
In delivering his decision, Judge James Mahan acknowledged that Sandford has medical issues and said to him, “You should not be ashamed or embarrassed about it. You need medication. You're not a hardened criminal. You're not evil or a sociopath like a lot of people we have.”
