Cartoon Network UK - Continuity and Adverts - Christmas 2000 (1)

The next Cartoon Network recording I have is buried about two hours into a VHS which I used to record an episode of Robot Wars. Good thing I decided to fast forward through roughly an hour of static to see if anything else was on the tape. This one is from Christmas 2000.

It begins with the ending of an animated Wizard of Oz movie on Cartoon Theatre - probably the one that scared the shit out of me for no good reason as a child - before we’re presented with a promo for Rover Dangerfield. I used to like this film when I was younger, and I remember getting excited to see it on Cartoon Theatre. Now, of course, I realize how awful it is. This film don’t get no respect.

A bumper lets us know Pinky and the Brain is up next, and they’re ready to take over the world. (No surprises there.) Following this is an amusing little promo for the Ed, Edd n Eddy Christmas marathon, where we get to sing a lovely carol about our three favourite scamming pre-adolescents. No doubt I was glued to the screen for the entirety of this marathon when it aired.

After that is an advert for Downy, a fabric softener with a slogan that sounds like something you’d hear a school bully say on the playground: “My clothes, only better.” Even the delivery of the line sounds like you’re being taunted. So you’ve managed to get a few wrinkles out of your shirt. Well done. What do you want, a medal?

Then it’s an advert for an S Club 7 album, and… oh, no… oh, God… I’m getting flashbacks… no… not that music… anything but that music… I’ll never get it out of my head… “Reach for the stars…” The pain never ends…

Once the song has infected your brain, next on the agenda is an advert for the 102 Dalmatians video game. If the movie is any indication to go by, this game probably sucks harder than a Dyson vacuum cleaner. Notably, Cruella de Vil fronts the ad campaign, telling you that it’s YOUR fault she’s been defeated, even though you haven’t played the game yet. Better pick up that Dreamcast version fast, kids - it’ll be gold dust in years to come.

Next, what looks like an advert for Dragonball Z soon turns into a promotion for the website. Visit it, enter the competition and hope Lego grants you with some overly priced bricks in return. You probably won’t be able to move mountains like this advert says, though.

The jazzy collage bumper returns, followed by a conversation between Johnny Bravo and Morocco Mole. Johnny steals Morocco Mole’s drink and throws his shirt at him, just to remind the guy what a little shit he is and how he should know his place. No one messes with Bravo and gets away with it.

A sweet little Christmas bumper starts the show, followed by the Pinky and the Brain intro, because, Christ, who DOESN’T love it?
