KAUAI, HAWAII — A 21-year-old Californian was too busy heeding his spiritual calling to care that jumping off one of the tallest waterfalls in Hawaii is both dangerous and illegal.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune reports that daredevil Shiloh Shahan was at the top of Wailua Falls when he got it into his head that he just had to jump. Shahan had already disregarded the rules just by being there, but made the leap anyway as he felt it was “the right thing to do.”
“It called to me spiritually,” he wrote later
A friend who was with Shahan captured the 200-foot jump on camera. In the video, he’s seen hitting the water feet first. A few seconds pass and Shahan is nowhere to be seen, but soon bobs up on the surface. As he’s floating face-down, the friend behind the camera can be heard shouting for him to “wake up.”
David McGrath and his family had been relaxing near the shore when they saw Shahan make the jump. McGrath and his lifeguard daughter were the ones to swim to him after his body floated up. They dragged him back to shore, where he soon regained his wits, reports the Garden Island.
Shahan suffered a slight concussion and some torn muscles, and claimed to have lost his memory for around five minutes.
Netizens have been calling him out on his stupid and disrespectful “leap of faith” after the jump was posted to YouTube, but the millennial defended his actions, contending that he was merely expressing his freedom.
Defending himself in the video’s YouTube comments, Shahan said he jumped because “it called to me spiritually.”
