KUKIO BEACH, HAWAII — A 25-year-old paddle boarder was critically injured Saturday morning after he was bitten by a shark off Kukio beach in Hawaii.

Authorities said the attack happened around 9:30 a.m. when an unidentified man was stand-up paddleboarding about 100-150 yards offshore.

It was unclear how the man made it back to shore, but he was reportedly being treated by people on the beach who applied multiple tourniquets to his right arm and leg before responding paramedics arrived.

Firefighters airlifted the paddle boarder to North Hawaii Community Hospital for further treatment, his condition was not immediately known.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources announced that beach closure signs warning visitors will be displayed for a mile on either side of the incident for the rest of the day.
