KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — Twelve people died and dozens more were injured when suspected militants stormed the American University in Kabul yesterday.

At least seven students were among the dead, Reuters reported.

The attack began when a car bomb exploded at the front gate. An unknown number of suspected militants then forced their way inside the walled compound and began shooting.

Some students said they hid inside their classroom but were attacked with grenades thrown from outside, NBC News reported.

The siege was ended by Afghan security forces, who killed at least two of the gunmen.

Afghan police said at least 500 students were rescued during the attack, which lasted for several hours.

No group has claimed responsibility for the raid, which is the second time in a month the university or its staff have been targeted.

An American teacher and an Australian teacher remain missing after they were kidnapped at gunpoint near the university on Aug. 7.
