MILWAUKEE — Video footage from riots over the weekend in Wisconsin shows some protesters attacking white motorists.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, protests turned violent Saturday night after a Milwaukee police officer shot and killed an armed suspect during a foot chase.
Violence broke out over the death of 23-year-old Sylville K. Smith, who was shot while attempting to flee from a police officer who had pulled him over, according to Reuters.
After several hours of tension between protesters and police, police reported a gas station was set on fire at 10:15 p.m.
Because of gunshots in the area, firefighters were not about get close to the blaze, according to police.
Later on in the night, fires were set at several other businesses.
On Sunday night, one person was shot in the same neighborhood Smith was killed in.
Police said they rescued the shooting victim, although it was unclear if the person was a protester, officer or bystander, according to Reuters.
On Sunday, Governor Scott Walker activated the National Guard.
