SANTA CLARITA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA — The wildfire spreading across the Santa Clarita Valley mountains persists, but emergency crews are working non-stop to subdue the blaze.

The most recent reports indicate the inferno, which is being referred to as the Sand Fire, has burned 37,472 acres. The U.S. Forest Service reports 3,048 firefighters have been called into action, and at least 10,000 homes were evacuated. By Monday evening, most of the evacuees had been permitted to re-enter their residences, but 18 have been confirmed destroyed.

The Sand Fire is 25 percent contained. Planes have been seen flying overhead dropping flame retardant across the mountain range.
