MEDINA, SAUDI ARABIA — Three bombings hit three different cities in Saudi Arabia early this week, coinciding with the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.
The first blast took place in Jeddah in the early hours of Monday, in a parking lot just 33 feet from the U.S. consulate.
According to Reuters, a suicide bomber parked his explosive-laden car in the parking lot of a hospital.
Two security officers found the man suspicious and began to pursue him. He then detonated his explosive belt, killing himself and injuring the two officers.
The second blast took place in the eastern city of Qatif. A suicide bomber reportedly tried to target a Shia mosque but failed, killing himself in the car park.
The third and deadliest blast struck the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, the second holiest city in Islam.
A suicide bomber detonated his explosive belt when he was confronted by security officers outside the mosque, killing himself and four officers.
No group has claimed responsibilities for the attacks, but ISIS is suspected to be behind the blasts.
