A flea gathered during a random sampling of 3 wild rodents tested positive for plague.

The small mammals were gathered at the Fallen Leaf Campground, and the one carrying the affected flea has been identified as a yellow-pine chipmunk.

Forest officials have released a list of activities and situations that are best avoided.

They include feeding wild rodents, such as chipmunks and squirrels, touching those that are deceased, and setting up camp near animal burrows.

It is also suggested that dogs be leashed at all times and cats be kept out of wild-rodent-filled areas entirely.

Immediate medical attention is suggested for both humans and pets if contact with plague is suspected.
