Captain takes control of UK's biggest aircraft carrier ever

ROSYTH, UNITED KINGDOM — The commanding officer of Britain's latest aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, has taken control of the vessel at Rosyth Dockyard in Scotland.

"As a naval officer I always want more ships and more aircraft carriers, but I can't see in the foreseeable future two more ships of this scale being built in the United Kingdom," Captain Jerry Kyd told the BBC.

The 65,000-tonne HMS Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier is longer than the House of Parliament and has a 4.5-acre flight deck which is roughly the size of four football pitches.

The Queen Elizabeth was designed primarily to carry the F-35B, which can take off on short runways and land vertically. It has two aircraft lifts, each of which can move two F-35s from the hangar to the flight deck in 60 seconds.

It can accommodate up to 36 F-35B jets and four AW101 Merlin helicopters. In addition, it can also carry Chinook heavy-lift helicopters and Apache gunships.

The carrier will begin sea trials next year and is expected to be deployed in 2021. Its sister ship, the Prince of Wales, is still under construction in Rosyth and is expected to be completed in 18 months.

The carriers will be the second-largest in the world, after USS Nimitz-class carriers.
