Chinese escalator swallows elderly man, tries to eat his leg

SHENZHEN, CHINA — An elderly Chinese man was injured riding an escalator in Shenzhen, China when his leg was caught underneath the steps.
The unidentified man was boarding the escalator to the second floor of the a supermarket when one of the steps gave way. His leg fell through the gap and was horribly twisted.
When rescue responders arrived on the scene, the man was in shock. They worked quickly to cut away the machine from the man's leg. The rescue effort took 40 minutes.
The man was rushed to Bao'an District hospital. He suffered a leg fracture.
The escalator was reported to have been inspected within the last six months. Escalator incidents aren't uncommon in China.
Last May, a toddler fell off an escalator after climbing on the handrail. Luckily, he survived. The following month, a mother was riding an escalator with her son when the floor gave way. She managed to push the child to safety, but fell into the machinery and was killed.
