Former millionaire spends entire fortune on sanctuary for dogs destined for slaughter

CHANGCHUN, CHINA — A man has spent his life's savings on building a dog sanctuary in China.

Wang Yan, 29, recently shared his story in a Sina photoseries. He had established a dog rescue center in Changchun, China, in 2012. Often referred to as the "stray dog sanctuary," Yan created the center as place to adopt and care for dogs that were abandoned or destined for the slaughterhouse.

China has a long history with dog slaughterhouses. It is legal to eat dogs in China and the country has no laws protecting the welfare of pets. China struggles to reshape its view of dogs as pets as opposed to dinner.

Yan's story sheds light on the conditions for dogs in the country, especially because he isn't the average pet crusader. Yan was a former millionaire and gave it all up when his dog went missing four years ago.

"My friend suggested I go check out the slaughterhouse, just in case he was grabbed and scheduled for slaughter," Yan wrote as translated to English. "I stopped by the slaughterhouse for nearly a week, and I never found my dog, but while I was there I saw so many beautiful dogs."

The dogs had been kept in cramped wire cages. After seeing the desperation in their eyes, Yan decided to buy one to save it. He would then visit the slaughterhouse on his free time just to see the dogs, and began saving individual dogs.

Yan eventually found like-minded individuals and were able to truck loads of dogs from the slaughterhouse to his rescue center.

Often, he wrote, dogs would become sick. After consulting with doctors, Yan would test medicine on himself before giving it to the canines. Once he landed in the hospital after an allergic reaction.

In the photo series, he mentioned the rescue story of one dog named Huangmao, or "Yellow Hair." Yan was able to rehabilitate Huangmao back to good health, but not all his dogs had survived, and Yan has spent all his money.

He estimates that food a day costs him 1,000 RMB to feed all the dogs — a total of about 3 million RMB over the past three years. It's a sacrifice that he and his wife have endured all for the sake of man's best friend.
