JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — A Michigan father drowned after he saved his 6-year-old daughter from a rip current at Jacksonville Beach while he was in town for his father's memorial service, the family said. Police said 28-year-old William Moritz ran into the water to save his daughter around noon on Saturday. A GoFundMe page for Moritz said he dove into the rough surf to rescue his daughter after she was sucked into the water. Someone on the beach grabbed the young girl when she got close to shore, Jacksonville Beach police said. Moritz and his daughter were taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. His daughter Maddy was released Saturday night. Moritz and his daughter were at the beach where family planned to hold a memorial service for Moritz's father, who passed away two weeks ago, later that day.
