FONTANA, CALIFORNIA — A man fatally stabbed himself in the torso Wednesday morning at a Target store, according to the Fontana Police Department.

Surveillance footage shows the man walking into the Target located at the Falcon Ridge Town Center shopping mall shortly after 11 a.m. and removing "a knife out of a package before using it to stab himself," police said in a statement.

The police said officers arrived on scene and found the fatally wounded man in the housewares section.

Authorities say the man died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles News Group.

The store stayed open for at least two hours after the apparent suicide, according to the Daily News. The store eventually shut down in the afternoon as employees began turning away customers.

The kitchen section was taped off and the aisle was covered with a tarp as authorities investigated, Fontana police spokeswoman Martha Guzman-Hurtado told the Daily News.

"It's disgusting that they would let people continue to shop when there's a dead body inside," Marlene Rodriguez, 34, told the Los Angeles News Group.

"At Target, the safety and security of our team members and guests is our top priority," said Erika Winkels, a Target public relations manager.
