Officer killed by friendly fire in suicide-by-cop shootout

LANDOVER, MARYLAND — A Maryland police officer was accidentally shot dead by fellow officers while trying to stop a gunman on a shooting rampage.

According to the Prince George's County Police Department, brothers Michael, Malik and Elijah Ford drove to a Landover police station on Sunday afternoon to initiate a shootout.

Michael, 22, opened fire at the station around 4:30 p.m., hitting two vehicles and a passing ambulance. He shot at officers while his brothers filmed the entire incident.

Officer Jacai Colson, a four-year veteran from the narcotics division, arrived at the station in plainclothes and found himself in the middle of the gunfight. He exchanged gunfire with the shooter in an attempt to draw his attention away from the station.

His actions allowed police to take down the 22-year-old gunman, though Colson himself was shot and later died from his wounds. An autopsy revealed that the bullet that killed him came from the gun of a fellow officer.

NBC Philadelphia reports that Michael Ford was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Malik and Elijah Ford fled the scene afterwards but have since been taken into police custody.

The cellphone video recovered from the suspects show Michael's last will and testament, indicating that he may have intended for police to gun him down in a possible suicide-by-cop scenario.

All three brothers will be charged with second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, among other charges.
