MS Dhoni makes a smart move to effect a run out

In the 3rd OD in Melbourne on 17th January 2016, MS Dhoni’s brilliant glovework combined with the agility of Umesh Yadav gave India an important wicket at a crucial juncture in the game. In a must-win encounter at the MCG India fought hard but lacked match awareness to pull off a much-needed win. However, their skipper showed great awareness behind the stumps throughout the Australian innings. Batting first, India scored a decent 295 for six in 50 overs with Virat Kohli scoring a run-a-ball 117 en route his 24th ODI century.

In reply, Australia looked in trouble at one stage but they knocked off the required runs with 1.1 overs to spare. The 36th over was started by Indian left-arm seamer Barinder Sran. The batsman Glenn Maxwell stepped out to the first ball and crunched it wide of mid-off.

Yadav chased the ball with intent, turned around and fired a throw towards Dhoni’s end. Mitchell Marsh was strolling back casually as the stumps are broken down by the Indian captain, who didn’t give any hint of rushing in to take the throw at all.

Marsh to his surprise saw the stumps being broken and he was a couple of inches short. The calm and casual manner in which Dhoni approached the stumps gave an impression that the run out was never on. Another wicket of Matthew Wade gave India hope after reducing the home side to 215/6 however Maxwell guided his team home with a mature knock to ensure a series win for the Aussies.
