Flint mayor unveils $55 million plan to replace city's lead pipes
  • 8 years ago
FLINT, MICHIGAN — A research team has compiled information on all known locations of lead pipes in Flint, Michigan, information the city's plans to use to address Flint's water crisis.

Following a change in its water source in 2014, the water supply in Flint was found to be contaminated with lead from old pipes.

To identify the locations of lead pipes in the city, researchers at the University of Michigan-Flint compiled data from a 1984 survey. NBC reports that they created a digital database after sifting through data from as far back as the 1950s. Information released by the team identifies 4,376 known lead pipes throughout the city. An estimated 4,000-plus lines may also contain lead, bringing the total to more than 8,000.

According to a news release by the City of Flint, Mayor Karen Weaver is working on a $55 million lead pipe replacement project with help from the city of Lansing, which has removed 13,500 of its own lead pipes.

Phase one of the plan will target high-risk households of pregnant women, senior citizens, children under the age of 6, and those with high blood-lead levels.

The Lansing Board of Water and Light will provide technical training for Flint workers to replace old lead pipes with new copper ones.

Weaver intends to begin pipe replacement in the next week and has called for funding from the state legislature and Congress to complete the project.
