LOS ANGELES — Three Chinese teens living in Los Angeles as high school students were sentenced to prison for kidnapping another Chinese teen and violently assaulting her on March 30, 2015.

Both the perpetrators and the victim are "parachute kids," a term used to describe students, usually from China, Taiwan, or Hong Kong, who are sent to study abroad while their parents stay home.

On the day of the crime, the victim was invited to an ice cream parlor, where she was jumped and forced to wipe up cigarette butts and melted ice cream off the floor.

Her attackers then took her to a nearby park, where she was assaulted, slapped hundreds of times and kicked with high heels.

The victim was forced to strip and her nipples were burned with lit cigarettes.

According to the Los Angeles Times, in preliminary hearing testimony the male defendant was accused to fetching a pair of scissors, which were used to cut the victim's hair, before they forced her to eat pieces of it.

Several other suspects were also arrested in connection to the assaults, including two juveniles. Authorities believe that some of the other teens responsible for the assault have fled the country.

Three parachute kids were sentenced to prison for their role in the gang attack. They all made plea deals to have torture charges dropped.

Yunyao Zhai was sentenced to 13 years in prison for kidnapping and assault and inflicting great bodily harm in one attack. Yuhan Yang received a 10-year sentence for the same charges. Xinlei Zhang got six years in prison for his participation in the brutal beating.

Yang wrote a statement that was read in court by her lawyer that said in part: "Parents in China are well-meaning and send their kids thousands of miles away with no supervision and too much freedom. That is a formula for disaster."
