HUNTLEY, MONTANA — Newly released dashcam footage shows the shocking moment two Montana police officers shot and killed an unarmed man as he attempted to swerve to avoid them.

The incident, which happened on January 8, 2015, saw the death of Loren Simpson at the hands of two Yellowstone County deputies during a police pursuit.

The 28-year-old, who reportedly had a large amount of methamphetamine in his system, according to a report by the Guardian, was driving a stolen Ford Explorer as he was confronted by deputies Jason Robinson and Christopher Rudolph.

The heavily-armed officers were carrying an AR-15 rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun. As Simpson approached them in the vehicle, seemingly steering so as to avoid hitting them, they fired at him 24 times.

Simpson was struck three times: once by a shotgun round and twice by the rifle bullets. One of the rifle rounds fatally struck the back of his head.

A coroner's inquest, that saw the footage played to the jury, on Thursday deemed the shooting justified.
