Escalator accident: Girl, 3, falls to her death at shopping mall in China

KUNMING, CHINA — A 3-year-old girl fell to her death while playing near an escalator in a shopping mall in the southern Chinese city of Kunming on Sunday.
The girl, identified as Xixi, was seen on CCTV footage playing on the fourth-floor escalator with other toddlers without adult supervision at around 11:40 a.m., reported Yunnan Web.
IFeng News reported that Xixi climbed onto the handrail, which is roughly 70 centimeters high. There were no guardrails around the escalator, and when Xixi lost her grip on the handrail she was carried up the escalator before falling to her death.
Footage from 15 minutes before the tragic accident shows an adult woman in a gray puffer jacket with the children. She makes no attempt to stop them from playing around the escalator.
This was the third reported escalator-related accident in China in the past week, according to Shanghaiist. A girl in Jiangxi lost her finger to an escalator, while a boy nearly lost his hand to one in Guizhou.
