Egypt's new parliament convenes after three year hiatus

Egypt's new parliament convened on Sunday, the first legislature in more than three years, weeks after a legislative election that was marred by a low turnout in the absence of any opposition.
The 596-seat chamber was packed with supporters of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi marks the completion of a political roadmap that was announced by Sisi after overthrowing Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013.
The first parliamentary election since the army ousted Morsi in July 2013 was held in two phases between October 17 and December 2, and saw a turnout of only 28.3 percent.
Sisi, the former army chief who ousted Morsi and then won presidential elections in 2014, had promised the parliamentary election as the last stage in a return to democracy after toppling his predecessor.
