Many doubtful over North Korea's nuclear test claims

PYONGYANG, NORTH KOREA — North Korea this week said it had successfully tested a miniaturized hydrogen bomb at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site, but the claim has been met by international skepticism.

There are four common techniques to monitor nuclear blasts, Reuters reported, citing the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). One of which is seismic technology, which monitors geological activity such as earthquakes. Multiple seismic monitoring stations detected a 5.1 earthquake near the test location — the Punggye-ri nuclear test site.

Other techniques include hydroacoustic monitoring which investigates underwater explosions, and infrasound monitoring which measures atmospheric nuclear blasts. A key verification technique is radionuclide monitoring which determines what particles and gases are left in the atmosphere. According to Reuters, verifying Pyongyang's most recent claim of a hydrogen bomb would require the presence of tritium and lithium.

"If they find lithium, then it's definitely a hydrogen bomb test, but if it's only xenon ... then you're not going to know," Reuters quoted Shin Kyung-min, a member of South Korea's parliamentary intelligence committee as saying.
