Iran fires rockets close to U.S. aircraft carrier in 'provocative act', says Pentagon

STRAIT OF HORMUZ — The United States military claims Iranian naval vessels conducted rocket tests within 1,500 yards of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier in the Strait of Hormuz last week.

According to NBC News, the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, the USS Bulkeley destroyer, and French frigate, the FS Provence, were in the area at the time of the rocket tests.

Iranian vessels only announced the exercise 23 minutes ahead of time, over maritime radio, Fox News reported. The rockets were fired from a position about 1,500 yards off the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier's starboard side, and were not fired at the carrier or other ships, NBC News reported.

"Firing weapons so close to passing coalition ships and commercial traffic within an internationally recognized maritime traffic lane is unsafe, unprofessional and inconsistent with international maritime law," Fox News quoted U.S. Central Command spokesman Cmdr. Kyle Raines as saying. He added that Iran's "actions were highly provocative."
