Runaway Boston train takes passengers through several stations without a driver on board
  • 8 years ago
BOSTON — A Boston-area commuter train blasted through several stations without a train conductor on Thursday morning and had to be forced to come to a stop.

The MBTA Red Line train was carrying about 50 passengers when it took off on its own from Braintree station at around 6:08 a.m., The Boston Globe reported.

According to the The Boston Globe, the train conductor stepped out of the train to activate the bypass mode after reporting a signal problem. The bypass mode allows the train to operate without the regular signal clearance. However, the bypass mode requires the conductor to set two brakes before leaving the train, including the lever and a hand-brake. It was not immediately clear if the conductor had done so, according to The Boston Globe reported.

The train conductor was brushed by the train and suffered minor injuries when it somehow began moving by itself and then travelled through Quincy Adams, Quincy Center and Wollaston station. It was stopped at North Quincy station after authorities cut the power to the third rail.

No passengers were hurt in the incident. The investigation is currently focused on operator error.
