California woman found entombed in ice chest inside abandoned car

WHITTIER, CALIFORNIA — The body of a young woman was found on Sunday afternoon in Whittier, California hidden in a large container inside an abandoned car.
The woman was identified as 19-year-old Dawn (Molly) McEveety from Huntington Beach. According to KABC-TV Eyewitness News, her parents said she was adopted at the age of 16 months from a drug-addicted mother. She, too, developed drug issues, which began when she was 13.
Maura McEveety-Sepa, Dawn McEveety's adoptive mother, said she had been hanging out with the "wrong crowd."
"It's a parent's worst nightmare. We were always worried that something like this might happen when she got with the wrong crowd. And it's happened," McEveety-Sepa told KABC-TV Eyewitness News.
Her parents last saw her in September, while she was serving time at the James A. Musick jail in Orange County for stealing a car and being found in possession of methamphetamines.
On Sunday afternoon police received a call about an abandoned vehicle. Officers were sent to Rivera Road, west of Bradwell Avenue, in unincorporated Whittier, where a red 1991 Toyota Celica hatchback was parked.
According to a statement published by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, officers inspected the car and smelled a "very strong odor indicative of decomposition" coming from the trunk. When they opened it, they found an ice chest in the cargo area containing McEveety's body.
According to reports, the woman was shot to death before being hidden inside the container.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the death and the people responsible.
