CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer has been charged on Tuesday with the first-degree murder of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, in an on-duty incident in October 2014.

The incident took place on the evening of October 20, 2014 when a 911 call was placed after Laquan McDonald was seen wielding a knife in a parking lot in the city. McDonald was later confirmed to have taken PCP, a hallucinogenic drug, at the time of the incident, Chicago Sun-Times reported.

According to Chicago Sun-Times, police officers responded to the incident ordered McDonald to drop his knife, but he refused and used it to puncture a tire on one of the police cars. Officers then requested for backup as well as a taser.

Officer Jason Van Dyke arrived among other backup officers. At some point he left his vehicle and opened fire on McDonald, Chicago Sun-Times reported. A total of 16 bullets were fired into McDonald's body.

Chicago has until Wednesday to release the police dashcam video which captured the entire shooting. It is feared that the footage may spark a violent protest in the city once its released.
