Rutland Boughton (1878-1960) is one of the most obscured figures of the British musical renaissance. Enjoying an initial success after his opera The Immortal Hour, he came to be one of the leading figures in the musical landscape until he pledged support for the Miners Lockout in 1926, becoming a persona non grata. His First Symphony, Oliver Cromwell, remained unperformed during his lifetime, only being premiered a century after its conception. Oliver Cromwell was a prominent figure during the English Civil war; first as a General, then becoming Prime Minister and Lord Protector of the short lived English Commonwealth. A war hero who became later a fearsome dictator, he remained strong with Puritan Faith, which he professed. Most of these ideas are found in this symphony, which follows a Lisztian development with sound British musical feeling.
Rutland Boughton (1878-1960) es una de las figuras más desconocidas del renacimiento musical británico. Habiendo experimentado un éxito inicial con su ópera The Immortal Hour, llegó a ser una de las principales figuras de la música hasta que apoyó la Huelga General de 1926, convirtiéndose en persona non gata. Su Primera Sinfonía, Oliver Cromwell, nunca fue ejecutada durante su vida, siendo estrenada solamente un siglo tras su concepción. Oliver Cromwell fue una figura prominente de la Guerra Civil Inglesa; primero como General, luego Primer Ministro y Lord Protector de la breve Mancomunidad Inglesa. Habiendo sido héroe de guerra, pronto se convirtió en un terrible dictador, que sin embargo siempre estuvo apegado a su fe puritana. Estas ideas se encuentran en la sinfonía, la cual sigue un desarrollo lisztiano siempre conservando un profundo sentido musical británico.
