Paris attacks: Intelligence services 'cannot watch everybody’

France has just begun to deal with the consequences of last Friday's terror attacks, the worst violence on its soil since World War II. The attacks, which killed at least 129 people, raise the question of how France will go about tackling this indiscriminate type of terrorism. Melissa Bell speaks to Yoram Schweitzer of the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv.
While saying that any intelligence failures and lapses should be "investigated very thoroughly", Schweitzer insists that "you cannot watch everybody - and you cannot watch everybody all of the time, as we are in a democracy".
He adds that the jihadists wanted to export to Europe what they have seen in Syria and Iraq, including the use of suicide bombers. "The Islamic State group has this culture of death and bringing people to carry out mass executions. What they were doing in France was a transfer of the culture that they have spread in Syria and Iraq to the cities of Europe”.
