NYPD sets up new counter-terrorism unit, ramps up security in response to Paris attacks
  • 8 years ago
NEW YORK — The NYPD has ramped up security in the wake of the deadly Paris attack last week, and has deployed a new counter-terrorism response unit to counter threats at "critical" locations throughout the city. Over the last year, New York City and Washington D.C. have become likely ISIS targets and officials are responding by building up their counter-terrorism efforts. New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton set up a new counter-terrorism team on Monday, that when fully staffed, will number at 500 specially-picked officers. Bratton told ABC 7 that the department will be sending a team out to Paris to study how the attacks there were carried out. In an interview with local radio station AM 970, Bratton said that chief concerns for the new counter-terrorism group are ISIS' use of mobile applications that the NYPD hasn't been able to intercept, as well as the use of social media to recruit and inspire "lone-wolf" attackers. According to the NYPD webpage, New York City has had at least 16 known terrorist threats since September 11, 2001 and the city's subway system remains a high-risk target. In 2005, the NYPD and the FBI uncovered a "credible tip" about a potential terrorist threat to the New York City subway after arresting three insurgents during a raid. Nineteen operatives were reportedly deployed to place bombs in the city's metro system. This incident isn't the most recent time the subway system has been targeted. In 2009, the FBI and the NYPD thwarted a plan to set off bombs in the metro system during rush hour. There hasn't been any evidence of any new, specific threats to the city's subway station over the past few years.
