Holmes receives the message from the inspector Gregson on a strange occurence in the thrown house on Brikston Road. There the body of the elderly American without violence signs was found, and on a wall blood wrote the word "revenge". Business is run by the inspector Lestreyd who isn't perceiving Holmes as the detective. After a while in hotel other American — Joseph Stendzherson who was suspected of the first murder was killed with a knife, and on a wall the word "revenge" was also written. Sherlock Holmes finds the real murderer. This is a certain American Jefferson Hopp who revenged the former members of sect of Mormons — murderers of the bride Lucie Ferye and her father John. As the revenge tool he suggested to swallow one of two pills, other Jefferson decided to drink itself. One of pills was a baby's dummy, the second contained strong poison. The first American — Enek Drebber swallowed a poisonous pill and died, the second — Stendzherson refused and showed resistance therefore Jefferson killed him with a knife. The murderer was arrested, but in prison he died of a strong cerebral hemorrhage. In disclosure of this crime the inspector Lestreyd got all glory. Doctor Watson up to the depth of soul was revolted with it and decided to become Sherlock Holmes's "biographer". Actually, from this point "chronicle" of adventures of the detective and doctor also begins. Its notes about the great detective soon won popularity among readers of the London magazines.
