MARKSVILLE, LOUISIANA — A central Louisiana town is in shock after a police chase resulted in the tragic death of a first grader.

WBRC reports that around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Chris Few was in the car with his 6-year-old son when Ward 2 City Marshal Deputies spotted him on Washington Street and attempted to serve him an arrest warrant.

Instead of pulling over, Few led the deputies on a chase around Marksville, before turning into Martin Luther King Drive and reaching a dead end, reports The Acadiana Advocate.

With no other way out, Few attempted to flee by backing into the marshals' vehicle, but the officers stepped out and opened fire on the driver's side of the car. Few was shot in the head and body and is in critical condition at the hospital. His 6-year-old son, Jeremy Mardis, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds, and died on the scene from shots to the head and chest, according to WAFB.

Louisiana State Police are currently investigating the incident, but have not released the identities of the officers involved.
