#MackIsBack! Cali high school reverses ban on 'pro-drug lyrics' hip hop duo

ALISO VIEJO, CALIFORNIA — You won 10,000 bucks and a free Macklemore show and you said NO?? Those were the feelings of thousands of students, and a few of their parents, at Aliso Niguel High School in California's Orange County last week after the school won a prize sponsored by Chegg.com, a textbook sales and retail website.

The winning school was announced on October 7 and was set to receive US$10,000 for its music program and enjoy a free, on-campus performance from hip-hop stars Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. But, after some expressed concerns that lyrics in the duo's music promote drug and alcohol use, school officials decided to decline the US$10,000 donation and said no to the performance.

But kids these days know how to organize and it wasn't long before #BringBackMack was trending. A petition on the website Change.org garnered thousands of signatures and by the following Monday morning, October 12, 2015, the school had changed its mind spawning a new hashtag: #MackIsBack!

Those who expressed concerns about Macklemore may not have been aware of his public struggle with addiction and subsequent campaigns to help others out of the pit of substance abuse. Macklemore is also one of the few rappers to publicly denounce homophobia in hip-hop lyrics and produced the award-winning 2012 song "Same Love," which took a strong pro-marriage equality stance.

Owing to pressure from students and many of their parents, the performance is now scheduled for December 17 and students will also enjoy a question and answer period with the stars.

Still think signing a petition is pointless?
