Students set fire to bins and tyres at the University of Western Cape in Bellville, Cape Town, on Thursday, October 22, as protests against tuition fee hikes stretched in to the night. Police reportedly fired tear gas on the protesters. A six per cent tuition fee hike effective from next year has led to widespread protests since Monday, prompting over a dozen universities to shut down.On Thursday, thousands of students marched to the ruling ANC party’s headquarters in Johannesburg to deliver a list of demands, including the scrapping of the increase in fees.
