Colombia Estimated to Hold 7,000 Political Prisoners

Approximately 1500 FARC and ELN political prisoners have begun an indefinite hunger strike in Colombia’s prisons. They are protesting degrading, inhumane conditions in which an estimated 7,000 political prisoners are held in the country. Specific demands include access to medical care and water, as well as an end to human rights violations and generalized mistreatment. Prisoner spokespersons stress that given the ongoing peace talks, this is the right moment to foster restorative justice instead of punishment, hatred and revenge.
