As pro-government demonstrators filled Quito’s Independence Plaza, right-wing protesters were held at bay to avoid a clash. Ecuador’s oligarchy “has only brought about hunger and need,” said one citizen, “because they put everything in their pockets.” Quito Mayor Mauricio Rodas, Guayaquil Mayor Jaime Nebot, banker Guillermo Lasso and congressman Andreas Paez continue to organize opposition to President Rafael Correa’s efforts to foster social equality.
