Guatemala: Protesters Demand President’s Resignation

In the latest move against corruption in the government headed by Otto Perez Molina, the head of the Central Bank was arrested and a warrant was issued for the head of the Social Security Administration, both of whom are suspects in a corruption scandal that is rocking the government. The President expressed his pleasure over the moves and took partial responsibility for appointing the officials. Before the arrests were announced, thousands of campesinos and other groups marched in the nation’s capital to demand the resignation of Perez Molina as well as his Vice President Alejandro Maldonado for his role in overturning the guilty verdict in former Guatemalan dictator Rios Montt's genocide trial. Maldonado was appointed vice president by Perez Molina's Congress last week following the forced resignation of his predecessor Roxana Baldetti.
