Fishing Kayak - Ocean Kayak Prowler Elite 4.5 Fishing Kayak. Testing out my new Ocean Kayak Prowler Elite kayak at Skinningrove, UK. July 2010. After many weeks of contemplation I decided to order my first fishing kayak. Being a shore fisherman I wanted try this kayak fishing business. I liked the idea of being able to get to where the fish were rather than having to wait for them to come to me as is the case when shore or pier fishing.
The most popular brand of kayak at the time was called Ocean Kayak. These come in a variety of sizes tailored to different applications. At one end of the scale there were the short wide models which offered excellent stability and plenty of storage but not so fast in the water ranging up to the super fast models which were a lot longer and slimmer. I opted for something in between, a Prowler Elite 4.5 model. My thoughts were, that at 4.5 metres it would be long enough to get some serious speed up and not too thin so stability should be reasonably good. This was confirmed during my first sea trials.
Over the years I have used this kayak many times, caught many fish and kayaked many different places around the UK and it has performed well on every occasion, even when the sea conditions were far from perfect. The only issue I have had so far is lack of storage. Many newer models come with a large centre storage hatch which allows access to inside the hull. Apart from that, this is a great kayak and although I have purchased other models since, I still go back to this kayak on a regular basis.
