Chess murder: Italian stabs, eats Irish landlord after argument over game
  • 9 years ago
Tom O' Gorman, a policy researcher for a conservative Catholic think tank in Dublin, Ireland, was stabbed to death and then partly eaten by his Italian lodger, Saverio Bellante in what has been described as "one of the most horrific acts of violence committed against an innocent person in Irish history."

The murder took place late on Sunday at around midnight, Bellante knocked O'Gorman out with a dumbbell after an argument over a move in a chess match between the pair. Then he proceeded to cut open his landlord's chest and tried to eat his heart.

This 39-year-old victim suffered dozens of severe knife wounds to his head and chest, which had been cut fully open. Ireland's most senior pathologist found the heart was still in the body, but that the left lung was missing.

After the violent attack, Bellante called the police to report the killing and confessed what he had done. He offered no plea at his arraignment hearing on Monday at a Dublin court and had no lawyer, because he wanted to show his guilt. The judge ordered he be held without bail and receive a psychiatric evaluation pending his next court appearance on Friday.
