An FBI agent was arrested on Monday, May 5, in Karachi after attempting to take 9mm bullets on a flight bound to Islamabad.

According to a U.S. official quoted by the Washington Post, the agent was in Pakistan on temporary duty as part of a multi-agency effort to help the Pakistanis investigate corruption.

According to the official, he agent had apparently forgotten a loaded magazine with 15 9mm bullets in his bag, which was found by airport security officers while he was boarding.

On Tuesday the agent appeared in court on charges that he had violated anti-terrorism laws that prohibit the carrying of weapons or ammunition on a commercial flight.

He was ordered detained until at least Saturday to allow Pakistani security officials to further investigate the matter.

According to RT, it is not unusual for FBI agents to be stationed outside of the US as they frequently are assigned to consulates and embassies around the world.
According to the State Department, the arrest, which has dominated the national media conversation in Pakistan, the case will be easier to resolve than the multiple US officers who have been arrested in Pakistan in recent years.
