Ukrainian military uses heavy firepower in major assault to retake Donetsk Airport

Ukrainian forces are back in control of Donetsk Airport after a major military assault.
A day after a landslide victory, the new Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered an assault on pro-Russian separatists in the east.
Pro-Russian rebels that had seized Donetsk Airport in eastern Ukraine came under heavy attack by Ukrainian forces on Monday and Tuesday.
For the first time, the Ukrainian military used heavy firepower, including attack helicopters and jets.
Ukrainian paratroopers were also dropped in to assist in rooting out rebel fighters.
The separatists stood little chance and Reuters reports rebels suffered heavy casualties.
At least 50 rebel fighters were reported killed. The Ukrainian military said no troops were lost in the assault.
The new Ukrainian president ordered the military action a day after winning a clear electoral victory.
Both the government and the rebels told the media that the Donetsk Airport was now under the control of the Ukrainian military.
