Celebrations over the return of Bowe Bergdahl, the US soldier who was released this week after being held hostage in Afghanistan by the Taliban for five years, have been overshadowed by controversy over the circumstances of how he was captured.

"I was pissed off then, and I am even more so now with everything going on," Matt Vierkant, a former sergeant who served with Bergdahl, told CNN. "Bowe Bergdahl deserted during a time of war and his fellow Americans lost their lives searching for him."

A handful of Facebook pages calling for Bergdahl to stand trial in front of the military justice system were set up when the prisoner swap deal between the Obama administration and the Taliban came to light.

Three days before the abduction, Bergdahl reportedly sent an email to his father detailing his disillusion with the US-Afghan war. He later received a reply from his father titled 'obey your conscience'.

According to Bergdahl's former colleagues, in the early hours of June 30, 2009, Bergdahl shed his weapons and left the observation post without authorization, bringing only a compass, knife, water, digital camera and a diary with him.

The 23-year-old was soon captured by Taliban fighters. U.S. intelligence found out about his abduction through intercepting the conversation between two Taliban insurgents, Rolling Stone magazine reported.

At least six soldiers lost their lives during separate search missions for Bergdahl.

Bergdahl is now recuperating at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany following his release.
