The bull running expert from Chicago Bill Hillmann, who wrote a chapter of the book "How to Survive the Bulls of Pamplona" was gored Wednesday (July 9) during the Spanish bull-running festival.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the massive black bull that gored Bill Hillmann was the heaviest of the morning's six bulls, weighing around 1,300 pounds. Hillmann reportedly used a rolled-up newspaper to try to lure the lone bull away from others in the crowd. However, he then collided with another man who was running in the opposite direction and fell to the ground where the bull gored his right leg.
"When I fell, the bull fell with me and gored me in one motion," said Bill Hillmann to the Chicago Tribune. "The horn went in one side of my thigh and exited the other side and he pulled it through."
The wound was a centimeter away from Hillman's femoral artery. He would not have survived if the artery had been severed.
Hillmann said he is proud to have been gored by the Spanish fighting bulls and it only makes him love the tradition even more, the Chicago Tribune reported.
